Abstract

In his classic study, E.P. Thompson explained how the emergence of the working class in England came about, and the implications concerning the process of awareness this phenomenon provoked. In several passages he supplied a detailed analysis of the turbulent political situation which arouse in that country as a consequence of the French Revolution, and the levels of ferment and support this event generated in certain sectors of society, a fact that produced alarm in the British government. The present article focusses on the above-mentioned subject taking into account some of the most relevant contributions provided by historians who specialized both on this theme and Thompson’s analysis, from a laudatory and vindictive perspective as well as one more revisionist and critical.
