Abstract

As part of a broader study, this article explores the connection between vegetarian ideas and the British left throughout the 19th century. To this end, it first examines the relationship between vegetarianism and the utopian socialist movements (particularly the ideas and projects of Greaves) and Chartism during the first half of the century. This section aims to analyze the millenarian and reformist tendencies that shaped the ethical vegetarianism of the period. The article then focuses on the late 19th century, especially on the growth of vegetarian ideas within the "socialist revival" of the 1880s and 1890s. These discussions shed light on how and why, in an era of expanding leftist political organizations, both socialism and vegetarianism became genuinely popular expressions.
