Abstract
The European Union is a very special political institution that has been analyzed from different points of view. A recent book by Perry Anderson offers a radical critical interpretation, in whose balance the influence of the United States plays a decisive role. This article attempts to provide an analysis of the guidelines of these considerations that, firstly, seek to show the different paths that European capitalism has taken in the face of the general economic crisis that broke out in 2008 and contrast it with the one followed by the United States. Secondly, following Anderson's analysis, the severe democratic deficits evidenced by the European Union are investigated. This vision implies a retrospective and requires a look that sinks its roots in modern political philosophy while becoming current in the context of the war in Ukraine.
