Artists' Personal Archives: Tensions between the individual and the institutional

Abstract

Peer-reviewed article

This text addresses some considerations about the re-
lationships between artist archives and historiographic
production. From a brief reflection on this link, some sig-
nificant cases of archives of artists in contemporary art
museums are covered succinctly. Reflections are provided
on the use of this type of archives from an investigation of
action arts and politics in Montevideo in the sixties and se-
venties conducted by the author, in which a study on the
artistic and intellectual trajectories of three Uruguayan
women artists (Teresa Vila, Graciela Figueroa and Teresa
Trujillo) was discussed. The situation of their archives is
analyzed, some of which are partially institutionalized and
others kept in the private sphere, as well as the scope and
limits of their documentation. Some research products
are detailed, including two exhibitions in which the archi-
ves of these artists were exhibited.
