The Chilean revolution seen from the documents of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union

Abstract

The experience of the Popular Unity in Chile had a strong impact on an international scale, especially within the communist and socialist movement. An important factor in the Chilean process were relations with the countries of the socialist bloc and, especially, with the USSR. For the URSS, the Chilean experience became a new challenge, within the framework of the Cold War paradigms. Despite public declarations of support for the “Chilean path to socialism,” socialist countries maintained a cautious position. In this sense, this text aims to expose and analyze the guidelines of the Soviet policy towards Chile of the UP in ideological, political and economic matters, based on the documentation of the archive of the CC of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and trying to construct a narrative of the historical process seen from the government cabinets of Moscow.
