Abstract

At several moments in his career the leading British historian of ideas, Perry Anderson, dealt with Antonio Gramsci's thinking and, very particularly, with one of the central concepts of his thought, hegemony. Gramsci established it in its most precise meaning within the contemporary political vocabulary, but it has had different uses throughout history, as Anderson shows in his last works, where he also analyzes the peculiarities of US hegemony in the international system. This paper analyzes these joint works and try to value them, while offering different perspectives on the fortune of the term hegemony and its probable validity in the light of Anderson's research and evolution.
